LandCruiser Broken Axle: The Real Cost of Skipping Wheel Bearing Services

Broken axle shaft and hub from a Toyota LandCruiser covered in old grease

This is the result of skipping the wheel bearing service on a Toyota LandCruiser: a broken axle and a damaged diff housing. It’s a big, expensive repair, and it was totally avoidable with routine maintenance. If you own a 4WD with serviceable wheel bearings, a regular wheel bearing service is one job you shouldn’t put off.

The job at a glance

  • Vehicle: Toyota LandCruiser
  • Problem: Broken axle and damaged diff housing after the wheel bearing service schedule was skipped
  • Root cause: Routine bearing services that were missed

What is a wheel bearing service?

Many 4WDs, including plenty of LandCruisers, have wheel bearings that are designed to be serviced rather than replaced as sealed units. A wheel bearing service, often called a bearing repack, involves:

  • Removing the hub and wheel bearings
  • Cleaning out all the old grease
  • Inspecting the bearings, races and seals for wear or damage
  • Repacking the bearings with fresh, high-quality grease
  • Fitting new seals and adjusting the bearing preload correctly

Your logbook sets out how often your vehicle needs it. Many LandCruiser service schedules include regular bearing services, and vehicles that tow or go off-road often need them more frequently.

What happens when the bearing service is skipped

Over time, wheel bearing grease breaks down. Heat, water and dirt get in, and the grease stops protecting the bearing. You can see what old, contaminated grease looks like in the photo above.

Without proper lubrication, the bearing wears, runs hot and develops play. Left long enough, the failure spreads to the parts around it. On this LandCruiser, that meant a broken axle and a damaged diff housing.

Why it matters for Gold Coast 4WDs

Beach runs, creek crossings and salt water are a big part of 4WDing around South East Queensland, and they’re tough on wheel bearings. Water and sand get past seals and contaminate the grease, especially when hot hubs are dunked in cold water. If you regularly drive on the beach or through water, have your bearings checked more often than the minimum schedule.

Warning signs of a worn wheel bearing

  • A humming, growling or grinding noise that gets louder with speed
  • The noise changing when you turn left or right
  • Play or a clunk in the wheel when it’s rocked
  • A hub that’s noticeably hotter than the others after a drive
  • Grease leaking from the hub or seal area
