When was the last time your Amarok could actually breathe? This VW Amarok came in with drivability issues, and once we got to the VW Amarok EGR valve, it was easy to see why. Years of carbon and soot had almost completely blocked it, restricting airflow and affecting engine performance.
The job at a glance
- Vehicle: Volkswagen Amarok diesel
- Problem: Drivability problems from an EGR valve almost completely blocked with carbon
- Our approach: Diagnose the cause, not just the symptoms

What does the EGR valve do?
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. The EGR valve sends a small, controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the engine’s intake. This lowers combustion temperatures and reduces the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions a diesel produces.
The catch is that diesel exhaust contains soot. Mixed with oil vapour from the engine’s crankcase breather system, that soot turns into a thick, sticky carbon that builds up in the EGR valve, the intake manifold and the passages around them.
Symptoms of a blocked VW Amarok EGR valve
- Loss of power
- Poor fuel economy
- The check engine light coming on
- Rough running or hesitation
- Excessive smoke
On the Amarok, these symptoms can build up so slowly that owners get used to a ute that feels flat. It’s often only after the repair that they realise how much performance they’d lost.

Why some diesels clog up faster
Regular servicing helps, but some diesel engines are simply more prone to carbon build-up than others, especially if they spend most of their time on short trips. Short runs mean the engine rarely gets hot enough for long enough to burn off deposits, so carbon builds up faster.
Other factors that add to the problem include:
- Lots of idling and stop-start driving
- Overdue oil changes and air filter replacements
- Worn injectors or other faults that make the engine produce more soot
- A crankcase breather system sending extra oil vapour into the intake
How a blocked EGR valve is fixed
The first step is confirming what’s actually causing the symptoms. A blocked EGR valve can cause the same complaints as a failing turbo, a clogged diesel particulate filter or injector problems, so we diagnose the cause, not just the symptoms.
Once the EGR valve is confirmed as the problem, it’s removed and either cleaned or replaced depending on its condition. If the valve is this badly blocked, the intake manifold and passages often need attention too. We’ve written more about this in our posts on carbon cleaning and EGR problems.
Can I just remove or block the EGR valve?
It can be tempting, but no. In Australia, removing or disabling emissions control equipment like the EGR system is illegal, and it can cause warning lights, limp mode and other problems on modern diesels. The right fix is to find out why the valve has clogged and repair it properly.
