Planning a Road Trip? Here’s What to Check Before You Go

Thinking of a big drive down the coast, a weekend getaway, or an interstate adventure? Before you hit the road, it’s essential to make sure your vehicle is up to the task. Here’s a checklist of key things to inspect before setting off on your journey:

Always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific procedures and recommendations.

✅ 1. Service History

Check when your vehicle was last serviced and when the next one is due. If your road trip will take you past the next scheduled service interval, it’s best to get it done before you leave. This helps avoid breakdowns and keeps your vehicle in peak condition.

✅ 2. Engine Oil

Confirm that the engine oil level is correct and check when it’s due for a change. Your logbook or service sticker should provide this information. Low or dirty oil can cause serious engine issues if ignored.

✅ 3. Coolant Level

Ensure the cooling system is full and that the coolant is at the appropriate level.

Important: Never remove the radiator or pressure cap when the engine is hot!

✅ 4. Other Fluid Levels

In addition to engine oil and coolant, check:

• Brake fluid

• Power steering fluid

• Windscreen washer fluid

Low fluid levels may indicate a leak that needs to be inspected by a mechanic.

✅ 5. Tyre Pressure

Check tyre pressures according to your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications — usually listed on a placard inside the driver’s door jamb. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre too!

Inspect the tread for even wear across the whole surface. Uneven wear could signal alignment or suspension issues. Use a tread depth gauge to ensure the tread is within legal and safe limits.

✅ 7. Lights & Indicators

Make sure all your lights are functioning properly:

• Headlights

• Brake lights

• Indicators

• Reverse lights
  *Faulty lighting can be dangerous and may result in a fine.

✅ 8. Battery Health

Check the age of your battery and how easily the vehicle starts. If your engine is slow to turn over, or the battery is more than three years old, it might be time for a replacement.

✅ 9. Emergency Equipment

Often overlooked, make sure your vehicle is equipped with:

• A spare tyre

• Jack and wheel brace

• Lock nut key (if fitted)

• Torch

• Basic tools (like a screwdriver)

✅ 10. Visibility & Wipers

Wash your car — especially the windows and mirrors — for improved visibility. Check that your wiper blades are in good condition and that your washer jets are spraying correctly.

✅ 11. Go for a Test Drive

Before your trip, take the car for a drive and listen for any unusual noises:

• Squealing belts

• Knocking or clunking over bumps

• Grinding or scraping while braking

• Ticking or tapping from the engine
