Most of the cars on our mobile schedule are family cars, 4WDs, utes and commercial vans. Every now and then, though, something a little more exotic comes up. This one was a McLaren that needed a mobile battery replacement, done right there in the owner’s garage on the Gold Coast.
The job at a glance
- Vehicle: A McLaren, plus a second car we found during a routine service
- Problem: A battery due for replacement, and a corroded terminal held together with a hose clamp
- Fix: New battery fitted on site; failed terminal replaced

A McLaren battery replacement at home
Nothing too dramatic, just a battery replacement. But it’s not every day one of these lands on the mobile schedule. Supercar or station wagon, the job follows the same steps: confirm the battery is actually the problem, fit the correct battery for the car, and make sure the charging system is doing its job.
Modern cars, and especially high-end ones, are full of electronics that don’t like losing power. Doing the job carefully, with the right battery and correct connections, avoids warning lights, flat spots and electrical gremlins afterwards.

Dodgy DIY: a battery terminal held on by a hose clamp
The second battery job on this page is the opposite of exotic. During a routine service, we found a battery terminal that had completely rotted and corroded away. It was basically being held together by a hose clamp.
The corroded battery terminal and hose clamp we found during a service, with the new terminal ready to go.
A temporary DIY fix like this might get you home, but it’s a serious electrical and reliability problem. Poor battery connections can cause:
- Hard starting, or the car not starting at all
- Voltage drops that upset modern electronics and trigger warning lights
- Heat build-up at the terminal
- Potential damage to other electrical components
Thankfully, we found it during the service before it caused a bigger problem.
Signs your car battery needs replacing
Car batteries rarely give much notice before they fail, and Gold Coast heat is tough on them. Watch for:
- The engine cranking slowly, especially first thing in the morning
- A battery or charging warning light on the dash
- Dim headlights or interior lights when starting
- White or green corrosion building up around the terminals
- A battery that’s more than a few years old and hasn’t been tested
If you’re seeing any of these, it’s worth having the battery and charging system tested before it lets you down.
