We know summer is on its way when the air conditioning jobs start booking in. Car air conditioning repair is one of the most common requests we get on the Gold Coast as the weather warms up, and two recent jobs were a good reminder that the problem isn’t always where you’d expect. Both were Nissan X-Trails, and both needed a new evaporator.
The job at a glance
- Vehicle: Nissan X-Trail (two separate cars)
- Problem: Air conditioning not blowing cold because of a refrigerant leak
- Fix: Leak traced to the evaporator core; dashboard removed and evaporator replaced
The first X-Trail with the dashboard out to reach the evaporator.
No cold air? It might not be your compressor
When a car’s air con stops blowing cold, many people assume the compressor has failed or that it just needs a regas. Sometimes that’s true. But very often the real cause is a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system, and until that leak is fixed, any gas you add will eventually escape too.
The first X-Trail came in with exactly that: an air conditioning leak. After pressure testing the system, we traced the leak to the evaporator core, the small radiator-like part that actually chills the air before it blows into the cabin.
Why evaporator replacement is a big job
The evaporator lives deep inside the dashboard, inside the heater and air con box. On the X-Trail, the entire dashboard has to come out, along with a huge amount of interior trim, just to reach this one small component. Some repairs need hours of careful labour before you even get to the faulty part, and this is one of them.
A second X-Trail booked in for an evaporator, with the dash frame and wiring out of the car.
Taking a dash out and putting it back properly takes patience. Clips, wiring connectors, airbag components and trim all need to go back exactly as they came out, with no rattles, warning lights or missing connections afterwards.
Signs your car air con has a leak
- The air gets less cold over weeks or months
- The air con works for a while after a regas, then fades again
- Cold air that turns warm on hot days or when you’re stopped in traffic
- The compressor clicking on and off more often than usual
- Oily residue on the air con pipes or fittings under the bonnet
Why topping up the gas isn’t a fix
A car’s air con system is sealed. It shouldn’t lose refrigerant over time, so if it needs regassing, something is leaking. Topping it up without finding the leak means paying for gas that will just escape again, and running a system low on refrigerant can be hard on the compressor.
If your air conditioning isn’t keeping you cool, don’t just keep topping up the gas. We’ll find the leak and repair it properly, whether it’s a hose, a seal, the condenser at the front of the car or an evaporator hidden behind the dash.
